Jimmy Narrates
About Jimmy MacGregor
Scottish audiobook narrator Jimmy MacGregor brings a naturally deep, subtly raspy voice and a lifelong love of reading to emotionally rich fiction.
A Scottish narrator who puts the book first
I’m Jimmy MacGregor, an audiobook narrator and voice actor based in Scotland, with a naturally deep voice and a distinctive touch of rasp.
I’m also an avid reader. That love of books shapes the way I approach narration: not as words to be delivered, but as a world the listener should be able to enter and believe in.
My work centres on emotionally rich, character-led fiction. I’m particularly drawn to romance, dark romance, fantasy and paranormal romance genres where atmosphere, relationships and subtle shifts in tone matter.
The most powerful moments are not always the loudest. A pause, a restrained reaction or a change of pace can reveal what someone is unable to say aloud.
Distinct performances that remain believable
Each person in a book should be recognisable without the performance becoming distracting or exaggerated.
I develop voices through personality, background, rhythm and emotional state. This helps individual roles remain clear and consistent across a full-length production while still feeling part of the same world.
My deeper register can bring weight, intimacy and tension to a performance, while its natural rasp adds texture where the material calls for it. The delivery is always shaped around the writing rather than forcing every book into the same style.
You can listen to my audiobook demos for examples of natural narration, emotionally vulnerable delivery and Scottish fantasy performance.
Recording from a dedicated studio in Scotland
I record in a dedicated treated room using a RØDE NT1 5th Generation microphone, a Focusrite interface and Adobe Audition.
The recording computer is housed in a separate room, helping to keep mechanical noise away from the performance space. I use a punch-and-roll workflow to maintain consistency and correct issues during each session.
You can explore the recording studio or read more about how the studio was developed for audiobook narration.
Working with authors and creative partners
A successful collaboration begins with understanding the book: its tone, relationships, emotional turning points and intended audience.
