Jimmy records from a dedicated home studio in Scotland. The room, recording chain and workflow are arranged to keep attention on the manuscript and provide a consistent environment for long-form narration.

A dedicated treated room

The recording space combines solid stone walls, a solid-core door, acoustic treatment, carpeting and an insulated floor. These features help control reflections within the room and reduce unwanted sound around the performance.

It is a permanent narration space rather than a temporary recording setup, allowing the same environment to be used throughout an audiobook production.

Quiet by design

The recording computer is housed in a separate room. Keeping its fans and mechanical noise outside the performance space removes a predictable source of background sound before it reaches the microphone.

Microphone and recording chain

Jimmy records with a RØDE NT1 5th Generation microphone and a Focusrite audio interface. This chain is used with the treated room to capture spoken-word performance clearly while keeping the technology secondary to the story.

Long-form recording workflow

Sessions are recorded in Adobe Audition using punch-and-roll. Corrections can be made from within the surrounding performance, helping pacing, energy and character choices remain connected across a passage.

The same setup supports solo narration and Jimmy’s parts in duet productions. Project preparation—including character information, pronunciations and direction—remains specific to each book.
