How Working with a Vocal Coach Helped My Narration
Working with a vocal coach helped me bring more depth and expression to my audiobook narration—and gave me greater confidence in my delivery.
Narration is about more than having a voice people enjoy listening to. It is about finding the meaning in the words and giving listeners a reason to keep listening.
I have worked with one vocal coach, and their help made a real difference. It brought more depth to my narration, helped me find a little more expression and gave me greater confidence in my delivery.
I cannot speak for every coach or every narrator’s experience. But I can say that having someone listen carefully and help me develop my voice has been valuable.
Finding More Depth
When I talk about depth, I mean more than the pitch of my voice. I mean giving the words more feeling and allowing the performance to carry more of what is happening beneath them.
A sentence can communicate information, but it can also reveal uncertainty, affection, frustration or something a character is trying to hide. Finding that extra layer helps bring a story to life.
Working with my coach helped me explore that depth in my own narration.
Bringing More Expression to the Words
Expression does not always mean making a bigger choice. Sometimes a small adjustment gives a line everything it needs.
A change in emphasis, a different pace or a moment of space can affect how a sentence lands. The challenge is finding what suits the writing without forcing the performance.
Coaching helped me bring a little more expression to my delivery. For me, that was a meaningful step: having more freedom to communicate the story through my voice.
Building Confidence
The confidence I gained was just as valuable as the changes in my delivery.
Narration involves making decisions constantly. How much emotion does a moment need? Where should the emphasis fall? Does a line need more energy, or more space?
It is easy to question those choices. Having support from a coach helped me feel more confident in what I could bring to the words.
That confidence matters because the performance needs commitment. A choice can be subtle and still feel assured.
Why I Value Coaching
My experience is with one coach, but they helped me a lot. More depth, a little more expression and greater confidence may sound like three simple improvements. Together, they made a meaningful difference to how I approach narration.
I would encourage narrators who are considering coaching to think about what they want help with and find someone whose approach suits them.
For me, it has been a valuable part of developing my craft—and a reminder that an outside ear can help you hear more possibility in your own voice.
